Associate Systems Engineer - Presales Data

Location: Windsor, CT

Job Description:

Sales Support: The Associate Systems Engineer (ASE) is pre-sales focused and all associated activities are based on the team goal of driving revenue. In this role the ASE is responsible for supporting the inside sales activities. This include assisting on customer calls to help qualify the technical aspect of the opportunity, providing any associated designs, delivering a bill of materials (BOM), providing competitive analysis and product literature. The ASE will work in conjunction with a regional Systems Engineer for design validation. The ASE is responsible for research and any information gathering required in closing the opportunities. Sales support includes becoming proficient with remote product demonstrations. The ASE will remove cycles for the Systems Engineering team and will help assist inside sales by leading remote product demonstrations and joining customer calls. The ASE will help technically qualify the opportunity and proactively train the inside sales representatives on the data product portfolio.

The Associate Systems Engineer will also be responsible for responding to pre-sales data requests sent to the “DataPreSales” distribution list. The ASE will respond to the email request, provide the required technical pre-sales assistance (i.e. BOM, Visio, research, etc) and involve a Systems Engineer for technical validation.

Systems Engineering Support: The Associate Systems Engineer (ASE) is responsible to assist the Systems Engineering team with transactional tasks such as handling research, providing product literature, creating a bill of materials, creating a Visio diagramming the design and interacting with the customer for additional required information. The ASE will work on answering RFPs. The ASE will then validate their work with a senior team member (Systems Engineer).

Training & Development: The Associate Systems Engineer (ASE) working in conjunction with their manager will develop a training and development plan that will include a gap analysis, self-paced learning, instructor led training and just in time training. Execution of the training & development plan will be the sole responsibility of the ASE.

Certification: The Associate Systems Engineer (ASE) working in conjunction with their manager will develop a list of required certifications. The ASE will prepare (study, lab) and take the associated certification test(s). Maintaining certification levels are a role requirement.

Relationships: The ASE will continual create and develop professional relationships with the inside sales team, inside sales management, Systems Engineering team and manufacture’s channel account managers and Systems Engineer. These relationships are critical to finding information, resolving conflict and driving revenue.

Special Projects: The ASE may be requested to work on special projects and will be required to multitask.

This position prefers that the candidate have one or more years in the networking industry and a good knowledge of TCP/IP, the Internet, LAN/WAN topology, security (firewall, IPS) and basic applications (Windows, Email, Database, etc). In general the ASE role has technical experience from an operations environment (internal IT) or as a recent college or technical school graduate. Additionally this ASE role needs to have good written and verbal communications skills. This position may not have the industry, technical or sales experience required for the System Engineer role. The ASE role is expected to continually develop their technical knowledge (products and technologies), their industry knowledge (competitors, customers needs) while performing the requirements of this role. The ASE in conjunction with their direct manager will build a training & development plan that the ASE will execute. For many ASE this may be their first presales Systems Engineering position or their first position within a sales organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Positive attitude and good work ethic.
  • Basic understanding of networking technologies including as many of the following as possible. Not all are required or will discriminate a candidate; TCP/IP, Switching, Routing, 1 Gigabit/10 Gigabit Ethernet connectors, VLAN, VLAN trunking, dynamic routing protocols, VRRP, HSRP, QoS/TOS, and various WAN technologies ( MPLS, VPLS, MLPPP, Frame Relay, etc.)
  • Ability to map customer requirements to a solution and begin the design. This includes strong listening skills and basic industry knowledge.
  • Strong collaboration, communication and relationship building skills
  • Good time management skills.
  • This individual needs to be proactive and be a sell starter. Execution is a critical component of success for this position.
  • Proficient with Microsoft office to include MS-Visio which will be used to create network topology maps.
  • Self development and continual learning are key characteristics of a successful Associate Systems Engineer.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • AS/BS degree in Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent certificate or technical school diploma.
  • 1-2 years experience in networking technologies (switching, routing, firewall) preferred
  • First level Juniper , Fortinet, F5, Aruba, Meru or extreme certification desired but not required.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work independently as well in a team environment
  • Must be able to learn new things quickly, need minimal direction, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Knowledge of traditional voice technologies
  • Knowledge of wireless LAN/WAN technologies and LAN/WAN security
