CBS Super Bowl XLIV - Day 4

January 23, 2010

We have completed the placement and testing of (301) 2410 instruments out of the (362) anticipated total at the CBS Compound. Simultaneously, we are working on completing (170) CAT5e cable pulls (labeling and testing), not related to traditional desktop communication.

At the CBS Production hotel we have Derek and Rob running (50) voice and data cables.

It started raining around noon. We have shifted all work indoors at the stadium. We could not start running cables over the “cable bridge.” We have labeled coiled every cable at the edge of the stadium tunnel, and we will complete on Monday or Tuesday.

CBS has started erecting the “game set.” Our cables are coiled at the edge and ready.

Our techs have now worked 80-hours of the last 96-hours available. They are tired and a bit weary. We will start Day 5 at 9:00 AM rather than the normal 7:00 AM, and hopefully quit around 4:00 PM so we can all get a little rest.

The security is getting tighter. Full vehicle search at the main gate, and no access without the proper credential. On Monday (01-25) it will start to get even harder to get into the stadium.

It is difficult to appreciate from afar, the sacrifice so many make to bring a television event to life. There are CBS folks here that spend 7-months of the year on the road so the rest of us can watch football in our comfortable homes on Sunday. Each has a very specific task to perform so in the end each of us get a crystal clear picture of our favorite team, and that most important, game breaking play. And the responsibilities are not always glamorous. Most never get seen or heard on our TVs. So like everything else in our lives, let’s not ever forget the “little people.”

Stay tuned. In the days ahead I will profile a few of the CBS folks that make it special for the rest of us.
